IBM brings iPhone mobile security to the enterprise

IBM has launched new software to help developers secure code and data in iPhone and iPad apps.

AppScan Source 8.7 for iOS searches through app code and alerts developers when it finds flaws.

The software also analyses apps that employees may want to use on Apple devices for vulnerabilities and alerts IT security staff to potential threats.

Big blue said the software would improve security without sacrificing the time to market for mobile apps.

Citing Gartner figures, IBM said more than 45.6 billion mobile apps were downloaded in 2012, which is why securing smartphones and other endpoint devices should be a top priority for organisations.

IBM developed AppScan Source by looking at over 40,000 mobile APIs for iOS apps using Apple’s iOS Software Development Kit.

These API profiles have been added to the IBM AppScan Source Security Knowledgebase and tied to the analysis engine.

The software also features complete language support for Objective-C, JavaScript and Java and includes the ability to do call and data flow analysis that will generate trace information. This new capability enables organisations to build secure enterprise mobile apps, regardless of technology choice, for employees and partners.

One of the companies that has been trying out AppScan Source for IOS is mobile technology firm KiwiTech.

Rakesh Gupta, chief executive of KiwiTech, said his firm had developed hundreds of apps for iOS and Android and as the risk from mobile malware and data leakage grows, “our customers are looking for ways to secure their iOS and Android apps and protect corporate data.”

Gupta said the software would help his company “proactively secure mobile apps and automate security testing to ensure our customers can keep pace with constant updates."

Caleb Barlow, director of Application, Data and Mobile Security at IBM, said the new capability would help clients incorporate “security into their infrastructure and solutions from the design, development and testing phases rather than leaving security to become an afterthought.”

AppScan Source for iOS will be available from 25 March. IBM launched its AppScan range of products in 2008, following the $2.1 billion acquisition of Rational Software. It has previously launched a version of the software that scans Android apps.

New Apple iPad software put to the test

Along with the launch of the new Apple iPad, complete with its superb Retina Display and faster graphics processor to make striking visual effects possible, came a slew of apps upgraded to suit the high-resolution screen.

Chief among these was iPhoto, a powerful and gorgeous image manipulation app which is easy to use but sophisticated in its features. Like most apps, it’s highly affordable – it costs £2.99. Buy it once and it’ll work on your iPhone as well. It is just as speedy and effective on the iPad 2, though it looks sumptuous on the latest iPad’s much higher-resolution Retina Display.

And since the new iPad has a vastly improved camera – 5 megapixels as opposed to the iPad 2’s video-optimised sensor, which struggled with stills – you can even take a photograph and edit it all on the iPad.

There are helpful touches throughout the app, such as the use of image-matching technology to help you find similar photographs as you browse, making it easier to choose the best one and delete others.

Editing isn’t just limited to changing colours, cropping images or straightening horizons with a two-finger twist of the screen. You can also adjust the white balance, add effects, change skin tones, contrast, sharpness and more.

It’s all done with your fingers – painting adjustments onto the photos with subtle strokes. If your finger is too big to brush accurately, just zoom in on the photo – it’s a clever piece of reverse psychology.

But there’s a lot to this app, so if it sounds complex, that’s because it is. And this is one of few Apple programs that comes with a help file built in. Although much is straightforward, it’s worth familiarising yourself with this first as it’s easy to go wrong when you’re unsure what you’re doing. It’s always possible to undo effects or return to the original image, but when something is new, it’s easy to panic. Thankfully there’s a one-tap shortcut that places helpful captions on every button.

Technology Focus: PCs? Not Dead Yet By Any Means

Mark Twain would have been amused by the remarks of new Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) CEO Tim Cook last week when he announced the "post-PC era."

Cook was ballyhooing the company’s latest iPad before devotees, of course. But he may have been insulting his shareholders. Truth is, only about 20 percent of Apple’s revenue comes from the iPad.

QQ截图20120312100847

As Twain observed after reading his obituary, "The report of my death was an exaggeration."

No doubt, the iPad family — with more than 55 million units sold, is a "disruptive" technology — as defined by former Harvard Business School Dean Clayton M. Christensen. But it wasn’t the first in the tablet category.

Amazon.com Inc. (Nasdaq: AMZN) has been selling Kindle e-readers for years, and Barnes & Noble Inc. (NYSE: BKS) has done nicely with the Nook. Analysts at Forrester Research Inc. (Nasdaq: FORR) estimate Amazon shipped 5.5 million Kindle Fires last quarter, while Barnes & Noble sold 3 million Nooks.

Apple Expected to Unveil New, Faster iPad March 7

Apple Inc is hosting a media event next Wednesday, where it is expected to unveil a faster, better-equipped version of its popular iPad tablet to thwart increasing competition from deep-pocketed rivals such as Amazon.com Inc.

The invitation-only event will be held at 1 p.m. EST on March 7 at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, where it also introduced the last two generations of iPads.

Apple, which sent the invitation to reporters by email on Tuesday, did not divulge details of the event beyond saying: "We have something you really have to see. And touch."

The invitation featured a partial picture of the touchscreen of a device resembling an iPad.

Apple launches are some of the hottest events on the tech calendar, scrutinized by fans, investors, the media and industry insiders alike.

The iPad has dominated the nascent tablet computer market, but Amazon’s Kindle Fire, which sells at half the cost, has chipped away at the lower end of the market.

The third iteration of a device that has helped put pressure on demand for traditional laptops and computers is expected to boast a faster, quad-core processor, and a higher-definition screen.

Some analysts and industry experts expect 4G wireless capability, ensuring that the iPad remains current as cutting-edge broadband technology from Verizon Wireless and other carriers gains momentum. Verizon Wireless is a venture of Verizon Communications Inc and Vodafone Group Plc.

"The picture is zoomed in on an icon and I don’t see any pixels in that icon," Avi Greengart, analyst at Current Analysis, said, underscoring how industry experts pick apart even Apple’s communiques for hints of what to expect.

"You don’t need exceptional foresight to guess that Apple is likely looking at a higher resolution display."
